A case of awfully sudden death occurred in Portsmouth on Sunday evening last. Mr Rees Thomas, landlord of the Cambridge Tavern, High Street, was sitting at the bar on Sunday evening about five minutes to eleven o’clock, eating his supper, his wife, two sons, and niece being in the bar at the time. Suddenly they observed him fall forward to the floor in what appeared to be a fit, and they at once carried him from the bar into an adjoining parlour, and a messenger was despatched for Mr Frederick Morley, Surgeon, who lives in St Mary’s Street. That gentleman attended with all speed, but his services were of no avail, for life was extinct before his arrival. The body was then removed upstairs to await a Coroner’s inquest, which was held at the Cambridge Tavern before the Borough Coroner, W H Garrington Esq.. The facts given above were deposed to by Mrs Thomas, who added that her husband occasionally had epileptic fits and had complained of pains in his side. Mr Morley gave it as his opinion that death resulted from natural causes - disease of the heart. A verdict to that effect was returned by the jury.

Eliza Ann Eldridge was charged with stealing five crotchet cases, from the shop of Mr Alldridge, in the High Street, on the preceding afternoon. From the evidence of Elizabeth Alldridge, it appears that she had left the shop for about five minutes, and on her return she saw the prisoner there, who offered the cases for sale as pencil cases. On looking at them, she found they were crotchet cases, and had been taken from the shelf in her shop. She immediately asked the prisoner where she got them, and she said her husband gave them to her, and they bought in Brighton. Witness then gave prisoner into custody. The prisoner, who declined saying anything, and presented a truly pitiable appearance, was committed for trial at the Sessions.
