Carvers Court

Hampshire Advertiser : Saturday 26 September 1846

On Wednesday last, about four o’clock in the afternoon, some watermen discovered a complete boy’s set of clothes, handkerchief, shoes and hat, placed on the beach, close by the tower, near Capstan Square, Point, and no-one being visible in the water near the spot, it was conjectured that the owner had gone into the water, and had been carried away by the eddy, which is extremely strong at the mouth of the harbour, and drowned.  The clothes were given into the charge of Pc Shawyer, and taken to the Portsmouth Station house, where they were in the course of the evening identified by a man named Bell, residing in Carvers Court, St Marys Street, as those of his son, a lad aged 13 years, belonging to HMS Excellent.  It appears that the unfortunate little fellow had on the above afternoon been home and taken tea with his parents, and afterwards left with the intention of going to the Common.  It would seem, however, that he was induced to bathe at that spot where the clothes were found, and thus met an untimely fate.  Every exertion was subsequently made to recover the body, but without success; it having been, no doubt, by the force of the current, carried out to sea.
